otomi print bean bag chair | DIY

I'd like to introduce you to the chicest bean bag chairs EVER.

I've been wanting to make the kids some bean bag chairs for what feels like ages.  I've never come across any in the stores that are good enough - large, neutral non-cartoon themed, and sinkable.  I say sinkable because a lot of them are more like poufs, which are great for a footstool or quick spot to sit, but I wanted something that you could really fall into and have it come up around you.

I spotted this otomi print stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils and this bean bag pattern from Made and knew I had found my perfect bean bag!

For the fabric I used a 9x12 painters drop cloth for each bean bag (half will be used for the insert and half for the outer slipcover).  For the paint I used plain white flat interior paint.  I used a roller since I was covering such a large surface.  When rolling paint onto fabric it can be tricky since it moves around on you a lot.  Luckily, since this pattern has so much going on it is pretty forgiving.

Once everything was sewn using Dana's pattern (I went with the larger of the two pattern sizes), I filled each bean bag inset with two Bag of Beans Bean Bag Filler that I picked up at Bed Bath and Beyond.  I can't find them on their site any longer, but they had them in stores for $15/bag.  I spent $12/bag with a coupon.  UPDATE:  I can't find them in Bed Bath and Beyond stores anymore, but they sell them online as two bags for $37.99.  You can also find individual bags for $15.69 on Amazon here.

I am so in love with these things!!!  The kids are too.  Actually, they're WAY more excited about them than I expected.  Not a day goes by that they aren't playing around in them.

They even have a handle so they can easily be moved around.  I can be found with one slung over each shoulder carrying an iPad and drink up the stairs.  Now THAT'S convenient!

And a zipper for easy slipcover removal for cleaning.

But honestly, my favorite thing about them is that they look so great!  No neon colors or characters pasted all over them.  They blend in perfectly with the other things in the house.  Ahhhh....

When the kids go to bed, I make a run for them.  They really are that comfy.

Are you a bean bag lover?  It totally reminds me of being a kid and being super jealous of all of my friends that had them :D

DIY cage light ceiling fan

Thursday, July 24, 2014

This past week I have been slowly chipping away at the kids' playroom.  It started when I decided I was going to sell the couch we had up there so the kids would have plenty of open space to play.  Only to decide later, after a little rearranging, to keep it. The new arrangement made so much more sense and we actually found ourselves using the playroom more!  The only problem was that it was always so HOT up there.  Now was the time to switch out the flush mount light for a ceiling fan.

I wanted it to look good and be cheap.  Story of my life.  I loved the look of the industrial looking ceiling fans, especially the ones with the caged light fixtures.  Some prices weren't outrageous, but they were more than I wanted to spend on a playroom fan.  So... here's what I came up with!

This was SUCH an easy way to switch up the look of the fan.  The fan itself is actually the exact same fan I used in our master bedroom and put a pendant shade on.  You can check that out here.  All I did for this fan was take the glass shades off, attach light cages, and swapped out the regular bulbs for Edison bulbs.

| SOURCES: ceiling fan . light cage . bulbs |

Not only do I love the look, but it really is practical in a playroom where things have a tendency to get thrown around.  "Mommy!  Watch how high I can throw Minnie Mouse!!!"

Do we like or is it a bit strange?  Honestly, at first I was bummed because I didn't think it was as cool as I imagined it to be in my head, but it has totally grown on me now and I love it!

DIY bracelet kit | BRIKA

You guys already know I love a good DIY.

When the two lovely founders at BRIKA, Kena and Jen, sent me the DIY bracelet kit created by C'est Joli I was immediately smitten.  You got the satisfaction of making something beautiful yourself without having to buy all of the pieces separately and in larger than needed quantities.  As Goldilocks would say, "It was just right!".

I had such a great time whipping these up with Izzy.  She was so excited with how they turned out.  So much so she keeps sneaking them out of my jewelry drawer and onto her wrists.  Which, is perfectly fine since they look adorable on her!

You could make one for yourself and give the other to a buddy since you get two!  I think these would be great for a jewelry making girl's night in.  Or, maybe a fun craft for a birthday party?

I'm digging the bright neon colors too.  It's an easy way to wear the trend without blowing peoples eyes out.  Have you been sporting neon this summer?  Or, does it make you shudder and think of your closet from the 80's?

REMINDER!!!  If you haven't already, make sure you check out my Rodan + Fields giveaway and enter yourself in to win!!!

rodan + fields giveaway

Monday, July 21, 2014

Today I have an amazing Rodan + Fields giveaway from my very dear friend, Taylor!

You have a chance at winning the REDEFINE Multi-Function Eye Cream!!!

Check out what this bad boy can do for your eyes!!!

Many of you are probably already familiar with Rodan + Fields.  But, if this is your first time hearing about them, I'll give you a little intro.  Do the names sound familiar?  They are the same doctors that created the Proactiv, and now have a line of dermatology based skincare solutions clinically proven to drastically improve your skin without heading to a dermatologist's office.

I'll tell you about my skin for a sec.  At the risk of sounding bad, I always thought I had my skin under control.  I washed my face every morning and night with a moisturizing bar soap and followed up with Oil of Olay (yes, I'm old school and still call it Oil of Olay).  The fine lines that had crept up weren't that bad yet and I dealt with acne when it showed up (more often than not) with spot treatments.  So, when I was first introduced to Rodan and Fields I seriously thought to myself, "I don't need that".  Ummmm.... how wrong I was.  I don't know why I decided to finally try it, but I am so thankful I did!!!

The first regimen I tried was REDEFINE

L.O.V.E!!!  Those fine lines I thought I could live with didn't just get better.  They were gonezo.  My come and go acne was more going than coming.  My skin's texture was amazing.  Makeup went on flawlessly and I seriously don't know what was smoother - my face or Sam's baby bottom.  But the best part, was how healthy my skin was and looked.  This will sounds weird at first, but stay with me.  I remember looking in the mirror a couple of weeks after first using the Redefine regimen and thinking, "Man, my skin looks so oily!" After staring at my skin for several seconds I realized my skin wasn't oily, it was finally full of healthy moisture!!!  I had been so used to my skin being dry and dull (even with moisturizing all the time) that I didn't recognize that gorgeous, healthy, dewy skin!

The second regimen I tried, and the one I am currently using, is REVERSE

I had a dark spot on my nose and an area on my upper cheek that had become more noticeable over the past few years.  No doubt sun damage from being out in the sun more often.  I am about halfway through my treatment and they have already drastically lightened!  I would say the biggest change was in the first week.  Not only did those dark spots lighten up, but so did my freckles.  I'm eager to see how much has changed in another few weeks!

They also have two other regimens.  SOOTHE.

Here is Taylor to tell you more about herself, Rodan + Fields, and how you can win some of the good stuff to try it out for yourself!

Originally, when I first heard about Rodan + Fields, I thought that it would simply be a way to bring in a little extra play money.  I didn't know any better and I didn't take the time to learn about it.  But then, I was hearing stories of several friends who I grew up with that were bringing in much more than play money and that definitely peaked my interest because half had full time careers and the other half were busy taking care of babies all day!  I wanted to know more because clearly they were doing well with working the business in with their already busy lives.  I decided it was time for me to start looking for something that would help support my family financially and R + F became the perfect fit.  I love that I can do something that is fun, where I can make a substantial amount of residual income all while staying at home with my kids.  For Aaron and I, this is a huge blessing!  To have only been doing it for a few months and to be able to pay our family's mortgage with just a few hours a week has been awesome!  It is so great to have been given an opportunity that can transform our family's financial future.  I'm excited to see where I'll be in a year!

The thing that impressed me most with R + F is that I can be a ground floor entrepenurer with the same doctors who developed Proactiv.  I don't know anyone who hasn't heard of Proactiv so clearly these doctors know how to build a successful multi-billion dollar brand.  I learned that R + F was actually the #1 clinical brand in high-end retail stores like Nordstrom before going into direct sales, so clearly they were proven and effective products.  This was such a bold but smart business move because they now do five times in one month what they did all year in retail, plus people like you and me get to experience enormous residual financial blessings because of it!  I also love that it's not a home parties company and you don't have to carry inventory, because that type of business model does not appeal to me!  The doctors have such confidence in their products and this business that they offer a 60 day money back guarantee to both customers AND consultant!  So, there wasn't any risk in trying it for myself.  I just knew that this was an amazing opportunity and so I decided to jump in.

I used the REVERSE for my brown spots and I've seen a clear transformation on my own face!  This is so exciting because I didn't think there was anything besides a laser that could reduce the appearance of my brown spots!  I get paid to be a walking billboard and to share the brand.  It's that simple.  I share this opportunity and products to others and I help my team do the same.  We are all over the news receiving awards all the time.  Harvard Business School just recognized Rodan + Fields as a "Once in a lifetime opportunity."  With endorsements like this, the word is spreading fast.  To get involved in the beginning of something this huge doesn't come around often!  If this sounds like something you would like to hear more about, I would love to share with you.  No pressure.  Just facts.

I also want to mention that if you decide you are interested in the products, by becoming my Preferred Customer you will save 10% off product pricing, get FREE shipping, and will be automatically entered in to win items from my own personal giveaways!  AND, if you become a Preferred Customer before August 5th, I'll waive your enrollment fee (a savings of $19.95).  Contact me for details!

best animal crackers EVER

Friday, July 18, 2014

So... this post is kinda random, but I had to share because these animal crackers are SO good there should be a public service announcement.

A few weeks back I was dying to go into this really cool home decor store.  It's out of my way and on the way there Sam breaks into a full blown meltdown.  Crrrrap!!!! There can be no turning back, I was so close!  Luckily there was a CVS right next to me so I ran in to get something/anything that would stop the meltdown and buy me some shopping time.  "Animal crackers.  Done."

Popped that box open and tossed some at Sam in the backseat.  Nightmare over.  And since the box was right next to me and I have zip, zero, zilch hand to mouth control I popped some in my mouth.

I shoved a few more in just to make sure my taste buds weren't deceiving me.

You guys.  These were the best animal crackers I have ever tasted!  Light, flaky, and even lemony.  Animal cracker heaven.  I practically ate the entire box on the car ride home.

I'm more of a Walgreens girl than CVS, but will stop at a CVS solely for the animal crackers.  There was one next to Izzy's reading class yesterday so I went in (literally in the pouring rain) to snag some.  I think I have a problem.

Anywho.  Thanks for listening to my public service announcement about animal crackers!

Oh, and those ubber cute bracelets Izzy is wearing?  I'll have more deets on those next week ;)

pressed botanical | tutorial

Thank you guys for your comments on my pressed botanical gallery wall!  I am still so in lurve with her!

It was such an easy process.  Here's what I did if you want to get the same look.

STEP ONE: Gather flowers, pretty weeds (yes, I don't discriminate), leaves.  What ever you can find that has a pretty shape, don't worry about color.  To press start with a nice flat surface and sandwich the flowers between two sheets of paper towels (don't use the towels that have designs pressed into them because it will show up on your dried flower - found out the hard way) and then place another flat object or book on top.  Then weigh everything down by adding more heavy objects on top to press the flower flat.  I waited about 2 weeks before pulling the pressed flowers out.

STEP TWO: Spray paint whatever side of the flower you think looks the best and let it fully dry.  I used Krylon's Premium Original Chrome spray paint.  I picked mine up at Hobby Lobby.  The shiny chrome paint really shows off the textures in the flowers.

STEP THREE: Lay the flower painted side down on the inside of the frame.  I used Ikea's RIBBA frame.  Make sure you cleaned the frame's glass really well first.  Any dirt or smudges will really show against the black mat.

STEP FOUR: Gently place your mat over the flower.  For my mat I purchased a large piece of black poster board and cut it down to size.  For my sized frames (11.75"x15.75") I got three mats out of one piece of poster board.

STEP FIVE: Place your backer piece and secure it into place.  If you feel like your flower isn't staying secure, you could add additional paper between the mat and backer.  I didn't have a problem though.

STEP SIX: Oooh and ahhh over your awesome pressed botanical!

This one is my favorite.  Blue Agapanthus (I had to look that up, I have no idea what anything is called).  I snagged found this one while driving past a restaurant.

Some others were courtesy of a McDonald's parking lot and a neighborhood common ground :D The ferns, leaves, and weeds are all me though!

My inspiration came from this image that I just couldn't for the life of me get out of my head.

I think it was a perfect recreation, for no doubt a smidgey-idgey fraction of the cost.

So, anyone going to be flower hunting this weekend???

pressed botanical gallery wall | dining room progress

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

A month ago I started in on a gallery wall in the dining room.  Well... I'm finally done!!!  And it turned out pretty darn awesome, if I do say so myself!

It took me about forever to confiscate gather enough flowers and leaves, and then wait for them to dry out, but the wait was worth it.

Here's how this side of the dining room looked before when I had the large buffet over there.

It wasn't bad, but I definitely like having the buffet in the entry better.

I'll be back this week to show you how I did it!
