living room mirrors + stariway update

Tuesday, April 28, 2015

A while back I mentioned I had been on the hunt for a set of three round mirrors for the living room.  Sounds a lot easier than it was.  I thought I had found a solution here but ended up ubber disappointed and still lusting after a set of mirrors that were no longer available.  Big ol sad face.  Here's the mirrors that disappointed.  Big.  Clunky.

But.... no more sad face because I've since found some mirrors that look just like the ones I had been wanting!  It was kind of funny.  Both a friend of mine and my mom sent me links to these mirrors within just minutes of each other.  That was all I needed to get my rear in the car and fly over to snatch them up.

They're the Round Wood Mirror Set from Pier 1.

While I was looking for the link I saw they are not only on sale from $149.00 down to $119.20, but they are currently running 20% off their mirrors on top of sales prices with code ARTISTIC taking them on down to $95.36, and also free shipping with code FREESHIP75.  Right now I'm totally kicking myself for paying full price.  My luck they would have been completely sold out if I waited on a sale though.

On to the stairs.  We had the carpet ripped up so it could be replaced with wood treads.  What. A. Nightmare.

The dust was EVERYWHERE.  I swear I feel like I can taste it in my mouth again just from looking at this picture.  Bleh.

That wasn't even the worst part.  That happened when we noticed none of the treads were flush with the existing wood along the railing.  Every step was different from the next.  It looked so bad you guys.  We had to have them rip up all the treads and redo them.  But thankfully we caught it early on before they got much further.

In the end they turned out great!  I'll get some better pics taken soon.  It really lightened up that part of the house which was a pleasant surprise.  Eventually I want to add a stair runner, but for now I'm just beyond thrilled to have it completed!!!

Before I let you guys go, I want to remind you to enter yourself into my Cutting Edge Stencils Giveaway!

My first thought when I saw the roses stencil was how you could recreate this popular wallpaper.  Gold paint underneath and white paint on top.  Wouldn't it be so goooood?!!
And here are some of my favorites from their chalkboard stencil line:

laundry room + stairway progress

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

I've been painting my little heart out over here the past few days.  While painting a wall has immediate gratification, painting cabinets does not.  I'm in cabinet painting hell.  But I know it will be worth it in the end, and the cost savings of me doing it myself is well worth the pain.

Here's a little update from the laundry room I quickly snapped with my phone.

I had to bring all my cabinet painting operations into the house from the garage since they showed up yesterday to start working on the stairs.  Fresh paint and saw dust don't make for the smoothest finish.  To save me some major room I ended up painting the section of doors where the hinges would be placed first so I could attach the doors back on the cabinets and paint the remainder of them in place.

Speaking of the stairs, here's what happened yesterday.  All of the carpet was torn out and they started adding in the paint grade risers.

It's a hot mess.  And keeping Sam away from the stairs resembles a wrestling match.  This kid is strong for 2 years old!

Ok, I'm out.  Off to paint some more.  Make sure to stop back by on Monday though.  I've got a little something that rhymes with schm-iveaway going on ;)

home office progress + 1000bulbs winner!!!

I hope everyone had a great Easter!  Ours was AWESOME.  Where's that damn sarcasm font???  Sam had a stomach bug.  The poor thing was completely out of commission.  It was like he was auditioning for a scene in The Exorcist.  Honestly, it was that bad.

He was feeling much better the morning of Easter, but I wasn't comfortable getting him out and about.  No sense in risking getting any other kids in the church nursery sick. We had a little Easter egg hunt at the house though so not all was lost.  There were no cute Easter clothes though.  I figured there was no reason to put them on.  If I would have, they would have ended up being target practice for Sam's stomach.

I love this pic.  Sometimes they really do love each other.

But then this one says it all too.  Look at the determination in her face trying to get that egg back from her brother :D  He was all out bawling on the other side.

Ok, so an update on our home office.  Here's where we were in the beginning.  Zip, zero, zilch useful storage.  The bookcases off to the right were horrible and wiggled back and forth.  Cords were all over the place and we always had junk laying out on the tables.

And here is the progress on the built ins!

They gave us LOADS of shelves. I'll end up taking a lot of them out since we don't need that many, but it's better have too many than too little!  The drawer fronts and cabinet doors have been added to the base part of the wall unit, but I haven't taken pics of them yet.  The best part about all of this is we will be able to store all of our cords and boxes inside the cabinets!  Woohoo!!!  No more tripping over cords or having Sam flip the power switches on and off.  Or... hearing the sound of Archer chewing on something and almost breaking your neck as you flip your head around in a panic to make sure it's a dog bone and not a vital cord.

The plan is to stain the desk piece that runs the length of the unit and then paint the bookcases and cabinets white.  I was hoping I could talk Mike into a gray paint, but it was a no go :(  His desk will be rotated to sit in front of the built ins.  We've also got plans for a super cool light fixture using some industrial pendants we picked up at Round Top last fall.  I'm praying it works!

Alrighty then, time to announce the winner of the Giveaway!!!

Patty, I'll have an email sent to you soon with all the details!  Congrats again!!!

laundry room | plans

I mentioned the very vague plans for the laundry room in my post here.

Here's what I have been envisioning for this wall.  Storage galore!!!!

We are now well on our way in here!  The cabinets have been built, subway tile is up (despite having a momentary meltdown about the yellow grout which I'll save for another post), and the faucet and sink are all hooked up.  I still need to prep the cabinets for paint and decide on a direction for wallpaper.  Here's how we're looking!

This is the toughest room to try and grab a photo of.  I thought it was going to work better with my phone but as you can see it really didn't.  I think that's my thumb and part of my ball cap at the top but I really have no idea.  I was leaning backwards over the washer and dryer trying to get this :D

My contractor and the guy that built these amazing cabinets (he is crazy talented by the way) are having an absolute fit that I'm going to be the one painting these.  They think I'm going to ruin them, lol!  I will say, it has shaken my confidence some.  None the less, time to pull up my big girl panties and hop to it!

I hope you all have a great weekend!  Happy Easter!!!
